Merida

Merida weddings offer the perfect colonial city wedding venue.

Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan. This is one of Mexico’s most hospitable and nostalgic colonial cities. There are numerous museums and markets which bring alive the area’s fascinating Mayan culture. Some of the world’s most important ancient archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Sayil, Kabah, Labna, and Edzna are located within a 160 km radius of Merida. There are two other very important reasons to visit Merida. The first is to taste some Yucatan dishes and the second is to take part in “Sundays in Merida”. The latter is when the streets of the old city are closed to traffic, and the downtown plaza fills with food booths and native craftspeople selling their craft at excellent prices. Other sights to see are the Cathedral de Saint Idelfonso, the Governor’s Palace, the Church of Jesus, and the Anthropology and History Museum. If you enjoy bird watching, Celestum is the place for you. Merida hosts the biosphere reserve that’s home to more than 300 species of birds. Visit during September – April to see the spectacle of thousands of flamingos taking flight over the water.
